ISO 9001 Revision Updates

The ISO 9001 standard is currently undergoing revision, with the next major update expected to be published in the coming years.

The Draft International Standard (DIS) was released in August 2025, and the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) is expected in mid-2026.

Organizations certified to ISO 9001 should begin monitoring this process now. While the final language has not yet been released, the revision will eventually require certified organizations to transition their quality management systems to the updated version.

This page will be updated as new information becomes available.

Current ISO 9001 Revision Timeline (Estimated)

The ISO revision process follows several stages before publication.

As the revision progresses, more details about implementation and transition expectations will become available.

Updates in the Revision

While the final text has not yet been released, discussions around the revision have focused on several key themes:

The 2026 revision brings definitions directly into ISO 9001 rather than relying solely on ISO 9000.

Terms remain consistent with ISO 9000 but are integrated for clarity.

Policies, training, awareness, and leadership behaviors must reflect a defined quality culture and ethical norms.

The separation of risks and opportunities requires:

  • Updated procedures
  • Clearer methodologies
  • Documentation of risk and opportunity evaluations

Organizations must:

  • Evaluate effectiveness of changes
  • Plan communication strategies
  • Review outcomes

Supplier communication must now include expectations for how they engage with customers and interested parties.

Your QMS must address:

  • Psychological safety
  • Cultural factors
  • Remote/hybrid infrastructure

Add “changes in needs/expectations of interested parties” to your meeting agenda.

Many of the updates are expected to refine and modernize the current standard rather than fundamentally change its structure.

What Organizations Should Do Now

Even before the final standard is published, organizations can begin preparing by:

  • Monitoring updates as the revision progresses
  • Reviewing the maturity of their current quality management system
  • Identifying areas where processes may require improvement
  • Ensuring leadership is aware of the upcoming revision

Early awareness can make the eventual transition significantly smoother.
